Introduction

When I went into Guild Wars 2 and played for a while the first thing I noticed is that I don’t feel like I am ever just ticking off a box. You leave town with one intention and instead you find yourself escorting a settlement defense, chasing around an event in the map or stumbling into something random.

That feeling of motion still plays a huge role in the game. Guild Wars 2, for example, is full of things going on in every corner of Tyria, yet you’re never overwhelmed with the rush to be part of it all.

Guild Wars 2 is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game set in the fantasy world of Tyria. It features a persistent online world, character progression, exploration, story content, cooperative events, structured player versus player combat, and World versus World battles. You might go 10 minutes collecting materials, then suddenly, out of nowhere, there’s a big event forming.

Beyond the story, there’s an open world you can explore, complete with underwater content, map completion, world bosses, festivals, and other gameplay that offers compelling reasons to return to the worlds you’ve already explored. The game’s competitive side has its own flavor. Structured PvP offers team-based gameplay of smaller match size, while World versus World pits multiple worlds against each other in huge battles for objectives and territory. New content continues to add to the game: new chapters of story, new maps, new masteries and encounters, and new rewards (including the new Leyspring Hollows region and the Nexus of Eternity content from the Visions of Eternity story).

The greatest advantage is the flexibility. Guild Wars 2 isn’t requiring that each player play the game a specific way. Guild Wars 2: “A very quick time waster” Guild Wars 2 is one of those games that one quick play session can turn into two hours without you even knowing it. You log on to do one thing. An event pops up. You do it. Someone else begins another event in the vicinity.

Honestly, some of that is what keeps this game interesting. Tyria doesn’t feel like a set-piece that’s just hanging in the background of the quest system. The world itself is constantly tossing you something to do and new players become embedded in those moments without there being a step-by-step tutorial. I feel that the combat also holds up because it requires you to keep engaged with what’s happening.

Dodging, positioning, the variety of weapons, and the timing on your skills all add more dimension to fights beyond that of just observing a bunch of cooldowns expiring. This should be a cost to watch for all kind of players.
